Norwich School of Art and Design

View artworks

Norwich School of Art began as one of the earliest of the provincial or branch schools which followed the Head School in London set up in Somerset House, by the Board of Trade in 1837. Unlike the expanding manufacturing cities, Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Coventry, Birmingham and Newcastle which proceded it, Norwich, like York in 1842, got its School of Design through reasons that were historical rather than pragmatic. It owes its existence to the rise and fall of the Norwich Society of Artists, whose members such as Philip Barnes and its last secretary, John Barwell, were instrumental in founding the Norwich School of Design... The foundation and subsequent history of the Norwich School of Art is part of a continuing tradition of artistic activity in Norwich, the only provincial city to have produced a fraternity of artists with a national significance in the development of European landscape-painting. Some of the second and third generation of Norwich School artists, John Joseph Cotman, John Middleton, Robert Leman and Thonas Lound, were also closely connected with the early years of the School of Design.
