Composition: Still Life with Honesty, Shell and Blue Vase by Margaret L Kendrick

Little is known of the artist Margaret Kendrick, yet she represents the relatively high proportion of middle-class young women who studied at Birmingham School of Art as a leisure activity. This accomplished watercolour is a stage 15B work of the National Course of Instruction - painting sketches of an object or group as a colour composition. Kendrick's composition is a still life group. From the left are shown Honesty, a shell, a blue vase and draped fabric. The work is signed in pencil in the bottom right and the embossed "ESK" stamp is visible in the bottom left with the date 1887 to certify that it was entered for examination at South Kensington whilst "Prize Work"has been rubber stamped on the bottom left.
