Composition: Still Life with Vase, Inkwell, Book and Cube by Albert Ernest Victor Lilley


Undertaken when Albert Ernest Victor Lilley was 18 years old, this charcoal still life drawing shows a vase, cube, open illuminated book and inkwell on a tabletop. It is a Stage 5a work for the National Course of Instruction - shading from the round, from solid models. It is signed and dated in the top right with "ACTC" in pencil (Art Class Teachers Certificate). The embossed "ESK" stamp is visible in the bottom left with the date 1887 to certify that is was entered for examination at South Kensington for the Art Teachers Certificate.
