Composition: Corner of the Machine Room by E. M. Southall

Little is known of the artist E M Southall, who is not mentioned in the School of Art minute books and does not appear to have gone on to a career as an artist. This view of the corner of the machine room in the Margaret Street School of Art building is significant however. Looking towards the first floor oriel window of the Margaret Street elevation of the School of Art building, it shows plant pots on the window ledge and machine parts for handicraft work. It illustrates the pervasive influence of the Arts and Crafts movement on teaching at the Birmingham School of Art, with the emphasis on nature and all forms of design and handicraft as well as more traditional fine art. Completed when the artist was 24 years old, it is a Stage 14b work for the National Course of Instruction - Painting flowers, objects of natural beauty or landscapes from nature. It is signed in capitals in the bottom left and stamped "ESK" to indicate that it was examined at South Kensington.
