Each of the four units consists of two vertical forms, one longer and thinner, the other wider and shorter than the other. Two colours, dark blue and dark brown/red, are used in each of the units, but interchanged.
Extended Pier IX by John Mitchell
The work is designed so that the four frames are spaced at intervals of 14 inches. Reading from left to right, the composition of the individual pieces is as follows:
(1) Left: A wider blue form extending downwards; narrower brown/red adjoining to right, extending upwards
(2) Centre Left: wider blue form extending upwards; narrower red/brown adjoining to left, extending downwards
(3) Centre Right: Narrower blue left extending upwards; wider red/ brown adjoining to right, extending downwards
(4) Right: Wider red/brown vertical extending upwards; narrower blue adjoining to right, extending downwards

In the notes that Mitchell wrote for the catalogue, he says: 'these four series [Extended Pier Series 1,2,3,4] differ from their counterparts “Pier” and “Short Pier” in so much as they are “worked” within a prefixed measurement and are not based upon a ratio principle. (All “Pier” series and variations consist of groups of four paintings showing the complete structural possibilities of each figure in a vertical position).'
The University purchased this piece from the artist following the exhibition, on the advice of Professor T.J.Clark, then Head of the Fine Art Department.
