Study for the Deluge by Winifred Knights (Monnington)

This is a study for the painting The Deluge with which Knights won the British School at Rome Scholarship for Decorative Painting. In 1919 Knights had won the Slade's Summer Composition Competition [link to Slade History/Summer Comp Text] with her painting Village Street: Millhands Conversing. Slade students were encouraged to make a large number of preparatory drawings for Summer Composition paintings including compositional studies and figure drawings, and Knights prepared her submission for the Rome scholarship in a similar way. Her designs for The Deluge went through several versions, one including a foreground scene of Noah and his family loading the animals onto the ark, but in the end time constraints led her to simplify the composition. The finished painting focuses on the people left behind as the ark floats in the background and their panic as the waters rise. This watercolour study is very close to the final composition of the painting and is squared for transfer.
