"This is part of a series of pictures I painted of myself making faces. They are painted from life using a mirror. Distorting the face is a way of side-stepping issues of recognition. These heads become less portraits of a particular person and more physiological studies of facial expressions and distortions. Paradoxically the sense of dispassionate experimentation with self-image seems to emphasise the strangeness and intensity of the relationship between the painter and his own reflection." Tom Hallifax
